Canada’s Deadliest Shooting : The Memorials
On April 24, 2020 by jmwebI was hoping the memorial at the RCMP Nova Scotia Headquarters had built up a good amount. I am familiar with this area of Halifax as there is a camera store just down the street however had never been to the RCMP HQ in Nova Scotia.
As I arrived, being the only one around, I used a standard zoom to capture some images of the memorial. This was the first time I got to use a standard zoom.
(Due to COVID-19, I am to use long lenses when near people. I have around 28 emails on safety in this pandemic from Reuter’s and have watched a couple of pandemic video’s based on their experiences elsewhere. They have been great at keeping all their North American photographers informed.)
Shortly thereafter, an individual asked from a distance that I do not take photographs of them. The group was going to have a moment at the memorial. I got out of the way and honoured this. They were off-duty RCMP officers. My heart sank.
I decided this would be a great time to send in some photos and touch base with the global photo editors. While editing a couple came up to place flowers at the memorial. I got out.
I went back to my car to finish. As I sat in my car working on my laptop, numerous police cars started to show up parked outside the headquarters. I had noticed earlier there were some RCMP vehicles down the street talking. But as time went on, this became a bigger thing.
I snapped a few photos and went back to captioning. As more cars showed up, I got out again and noticed behind me was an officer I had met the previous day.
As time went on, more vehicles showed up.
A procession was going to happen. Usually, the funeral for a fallen RCMP officer has thousands of people however COVID19 put a pause on that.
Turns out, this was the procession.
