Covering Hurricane Fiona
On October 10, 2022 by jmwebOut of the multiple people dragged out to sea, one was un-accounted for. RCMP issued a release saying a 73 year old was dragged out to sea.
A Coast Guard helicopter was called in to help with the search which was only made tougher by the amount of debris along the coastline. The helicopter would serve as a dual purpose. To look along the shores meanwhile also using the propellers to move away debris on the coast.
I would jump in my car and head up around Mouse Island while checking out the rest of Port aux Basques.
From here, I would travel up the coast to Burnt Islands and Rose-Blanche.
Capturing my last image of two people looking out to the sea after a long day.
Or so I thought. Upon arriving back at Hotel Port aux Basques, I ran into the mayor. His eyes were in tears. I also ran into Gudie Hutching, the Member of Parliament for the riding. They asked me to take a photo using Gudie’s phone. I certainly did.
A much needed break. Upon heading into my hotel room, I had an email in my inbox from a Reuters client photo editor:
“Hi John, just a quick note to say your coverage of Fiona today is very strong…I sincerely hope you and your loved ones are safe. And hope your homes are okay too.”
This simple and short note meant the world to me. Onto September 26. Next page.
