Hurricane Lee Coverage from Nova Scotia

In September, an editor at Reuters called and asked me to cover Hurricane Lee as it came up the Eastern seaboard.

I had been following this storm as it was in the South. Within a 24 hour window, this storm escalated quickly. In the early mornings of September 6, 2023 this former wave was a Tropical Storm. Twenty-five hours later, it was a category-4 Hurricane. The monster was rapidly grew. The early models had it coming towards Atlantic Canada.

I was watching this storm grow as I was in Southern Nova Scotia. I had been there a week prior, visiting many different locations creating imagery for my postcards, calendars, books and jigsaw puzzles.

The spaghetti models had it making landfall between Maine and Nova Scotia. A week prior, I was in Southern Nova Scotia exploring new areas like Lockeport. With some houses being so close to the beach, I was rather concerned for the houses being impacted by the Hurricane, so I choose that area as a good spot to be. Another area was Shelburne which had less of straight path to the Atlantic Ocean, but none the less some areas where I was concerned with flooding.

Social media was abuzz with people asking if there is a such thing as a category 6 hurricane. Some suggesting there should be.

As the storm moved North, dry wind sheer really took its toll on Hurricane Lee. The category 5 hurricane was downgraded to a category 2. The storm ended up regaining strength to a category 3 hurricane before coming into more wind sheer which again knocked it down to a category 1. By this time, the storm had its sights fully on our area.

So I went down to Southern Nova Scotia, staying in a motel in Shelburne. I woke up the next morning and started exploring the community as the storm was hitting. A lot of the media had setup on the waterfront. I guess we all picked the same spot to be.

While in Shelburne, the water levels were picking up so I captured some video of the waves popping up on the dock. At this stage I figured I would move along to Lockeport.

The lone road to the Island had debris being blown onto it from the beach.

The excitement in Lockeport was dwindling. With no big new developments happening here, I decided to go North and checkout some other communities, like Liverpool where a few different roads were marked closed by the province.

After this, I ended up calling it a day. Onto day 2 of covering Hurricane Lee.
