QMJHL: Quebec Rempart vs Moncton Wildcats
On January 15, 2023 by jmwebThe Quebec Rempart were embarking on a maritime tour and as per usual, I was tasked with covering all their games. They are now the only QMJHL team I am tasked with covering on the regular. Their first game was in Moncton against the Wildcats, so I left Wednesday and went over.
For the first period, I would capture images from between the two benches where there is a photo spot in Moncton (as well as Cape Breton). At this point, I ran into the Moncton Wildcats team photographer and we chatted a bit about the World Juniors. He was kind enough to remind me that what I do is really an anomaly. Being paid to travel and cover hockey is really a big bonus where as most only cover games in their city.
After the first, I was on my way upstairs to file my first period images where I ran into Kevin Barrett from the Telegraph Journal. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Kevin at the World Juniors and the Memorial Cup in 2022. He does a great job on New Brunswick sports updates on Twitter.
After captioning and filling my images, it was time for the second period to begin where I went down to the hockey hole nearest the Quebec Rempart bench.
After covering most of the second period, I was upstairs covering the game from my desk. Using a long lens, I was able to get a bit ahead and caption while covering the game. For the third period, things were tight so I went down to the concourse level.
While on the concourse level, I had one of the Moncton Wildcats head office staff ask if I was at the World Juniors, sure enough I was and we had a short chat about that. The third period was the most intense, things really picked up in the third as the Rempart ended up winning 4-2.
